What Works For Me: Value in Self-worth

Updated: Nov 23, 2023

“Respect yourself enough to walk away from anyone or anything that no longer serves you, grows you, or makes you happy.”

It is always important and necessary to appreciate yourself and your worth. "Self-worth comes from within to give you the ability to receive self-esteem." In addition, self-worth helps to protect us from many types of mental illnesses and emotional problems, according to Stephanie Kirby.

"Self-worth is defined as an internal state of being that comes from self-understanding, self-love and self-acceptance." Self worth is also directly linked to how much you value yourself when it relates to the different types of health such as mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, socially, environmentally, and intellectually. When it comes to these types of health, it is important to have some form of balance between them in your life in order to practice self-worth and also bring your life more value.

Here are some ways to nourish your self-esteem when it is low, according to Guy Winch:

  1. Use positive affirmations correctly.

  2. Identify your competencies and develop them.

  3. Learn to accept compliments.

  4. Eliminate self-criticism and introduce self-compassion.

  5. Affirm your real worth.

Furthermore, self-worth is the opinion you have about yourself and the value you place on yourself. When dealing with mental and physical health problems, doubting your capabilities is one way that will hurt you more than help you. Everyone is capable of trying and more than able to try again no matter how many times you fall. Its important to understand and believe in yourself, that you are valuable, your life is valuable and you deserve good things.

Having a sense of self-worth means that you value yourself, and having a sense of self-value means that you are worthy, according to Courtney E. Ackerman.

According to Aleksandra Slijepcevic, there are also 11 ways to value yourself more which include:

  1. Acknowledge the Inner Critic

  2. Receive a Compliment

  3. Be Grateful for Effort

  4. Forgive Yourself Often

  5. Practice Affirmations in the Mirror

  6. Give Attention to Your Dreams

  7. Let Go of Comparison

  8. Find Ways to Serve Others

  9. Accept Yourself as You Are

  10. Don't Settle for Less

  11. When in Doubt, Remember Your Perseverance

"Self-worth is the umbrella term that represents our core being and who we are at the center of our humanness. The steps we take to actionably align ourselves to that worth is the definition and purpose of self-value."

If you need help to start valuing yourself properly, here are a few tips:

  • Compare yourself to no one.

- You decrease your personal sense of value and appreciation when you constantly compare yourself to others.

  • Embrace your mistakes and learn from them.

- Learning from your mistakes helps you grow as a person. You also learn more about yourself when it relates to your likes, dislikes, and way of thinking. You learn what to do better and how to control your emotions.

  • Take opportunities to develop yourself.

- Everyday we wake up is another chance to make things right in our lives. Those mistakes help us grow because we learn from them. Self-growth is important in self-love and value.

  • Share your journey with someone you trust.

- Talking about whatever you are going through helps with understanding your emotions and how you feel. This becomes a learning mechanism when understanding your value and sharing it with others. It's also helpful to keep in mind that you are never alone.

To accept and value yourself, it's important to embrace who you are and who you are becoming.

Allow yourself to be a work in progress.

There is always room for growth and self healing, it just takes time.

Be curious about who you are.

Learn about yourself. Explore your strengths and weaknesses, personality, values, and preferences.

Let go of what you can't control.

You can control the decisions you make but you cannot control the outcomes and consequences of your actions. Control what is close to you like your tomorrows and let go of what is behind you like your yesterdays.

Make space for fun and joy.

There is always room for happiness no matter how you may feel emotionally. Allow room for it and you will attract it.
